Dr. Michael Stephen, P.G., CEO, Michael Poff, P.E., Vice President of Engineering, and Dr. Vadim Alymov, Coastal Modeler, all with Coastal Engineering Consultants, Inc. (CEC) were major contributors at the Florida Shore & Beach Preservation Association (FSBPA) Annual Conference held Sept. 26-28, 2012 at the Waldorf Astoria, Naples, Florida.

Michael Poff and Vadim Alymov presented 35 Years of Beach Management on Marco Island, a summary of the award-winning coastal restoration project performed by CEC. This signature project placed 1.2 million cubic yards of sand from two offshore sources, terminal structures, dune systems, and environmental mitigation to stabilize 14,000 linear feet of Marco Island shoreline. Their presentation provided a history of Big Marco Pass and Caxambas Pass and summarized the studies, coastal engineering processes, sediment budget, and borrows areas at the inlets.

Dr. Stephen participated in a select group of Florida Senior Coastal Statesmen addressing the Fireside Chat Series: A Bucket List of Policy, Funding, and Permitting “Reform” Recommendations to Insure the Future Sustainability of Florida’s Beach Management Program. This roundtable discussion centered on “lessons learned” with regard to project performance, public perception and funding, and continues FSBPA’s recent efforts to focus on statewide improvements to its already quite successful beach program.
